Structural Engineering Project, Structural Technical Assistance

Animalario de contención biológica

We developed the structural engineering project and structural technical assistance during the construction of the new Biological Containment Level 3 —NCB3— animal facility at the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Algete, Madrid, belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. From a structural standpoint, this is a highly technically demanding intervention, shaped by the specific requirements of a biological containment facility.

Calter participated in the project by providing structural technical assistance, defining the resistant structural solution and offering technical support throughout the building’s development. The structure is organized across the ground floor, first floor, second floor, and roof level, with a total floor plan area of approximately 1,500 m². The structural solution was designed based on criteria of robustness, durability, and compatibility with a highly specialized technical program.

What makes this project unique is that the structure must support a building where construction precision is critical. The containment rooms, boxes, technical areas, and associated systems require tolerances, clearances, service penetrations, and detailed solutions that are compatible with safe and verifiable operation. In this context, the structural work is not limited to resistance calculations alone, but actively contributes to the overall viability of a complex scientific infrastructure, where BIM coordination, geometric definition, and integration with building services play a central role.
