Erandio Footbridge

It is a mobile, pedestrian and cyclist bridge that will connect the banks of the Bilbao estuary through the towns of Barakaldo and Erandio. Residents and visitors of both municipalities will be just 300 meters apart, instead of the 7 km that previously separated them by road. Among other things, the bridge will serve as a link between the Erandio metro and the Barakaldo train, thus facilitating the lives of tens of thousands of people daily. As well as between the bicycle lane network on both banks of the estuary.

We undertook this project alongside the prestigious structural engineering consultancy Schlaich Bergermann Partner SBP, thanks to the trust of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia. The footbridge has a total length of 350 meters and features a 60-meter central movable span that, when opened, allows the passage of vessels. The platform is six meters wide, three for cyclists and three for pedestrians.

The structure has a curved design and incorporates a mobile mechanism inspired by high-precision clockwork systems. One of the great challenges was adapting it to the terrain, both considering its subsequent use and the complex installation process. To this end, it was divided into ten metal sections prepared to be assembled with total precision.

All Iron is set to become one of the most recognizable pedestrian and cyclist infrastructures in the province of Bizkaia. Both for its beauty and for its technical complexity and precision.
